Work and Art
Only 4 days of vacation and I kinda forgot how to render. Needs to pick up the pace!
Posting Art
This week I uploaded my commissioned artwork for ham and it had pretty good engagement! tarou2 and Soreyu followed me!!!! Their works influenced my a lot in the past, especially in character design and layout.
Attribution in Moodboards
After this commission batch, I realize that I do rely on moodboards (e.g. other people's art) as a creativity fuel, inspiration and a way to communicate with my client. I think I should be more transparent and supportive by leaving credits to every single piece of media that exists in my moodboards. I use Eagle to collect inspiration so it should be easier for me to do that since the app also records the link of any images saved with the Chrome Extension.
(Also goes in line with the call to use Pinterest more ethically)
The rise of artist study on Youtube
I noticed that there are way more and I totally love the insights ranging from software techniques to fundamental knowledges. Everything is from observation and trial and error. I really love this kind of communication among artists! Art Youtubers also has the additional skill of video storytelling and that's really cool!
Possible Criticism of the Art community
- One thing I have to criticize is that a lot of artists tend to view photograph (or other non-drawing form of art) as just "material", they would leave full credit and original links for fellow painter but never for photographer or models.
- I speculate that it's also related to the unethical side of Pinterest: images without credits are littered there.
- another reason might be it is difficult to empathize and understand things that are outside our field of concern.
- It's just anecdotal but I noticed many graphic designers look down on highly creative work of illustrators just because they don't solve interdisciplinary problems in a business settings.
- another anecdote that I saw my weebs friends went through: "Concept artist" (more western-oriented and geared towards problem solving or have a culture-agnostic look-aka not-anime) look down on anything that has anime proportions.
Favorite Art of the Week
- Undoubtedly Irene's new skin by aZLing4!
- It's at 01:17.
- (I want to make sure that every link on this site would point to first-party source, no repost site is allowed in this garden. There may be some exceptions but currently I haven't thought of anything ethical enough.)
- I really love the use of extreme perspective, (notice the angle of the suitcase), but somehow it still look very natural, might be because of the lower details in the bottom part, it doesn't pull the attention away from the character, her face is almost eye-level.
- some details I like
- Usage of thin strings that it's not just a black line
- the 2 big rectangle shape of the door and the floor
- many layers with different textural quality: the water surface represented by organic black blobs, the rigid and oredered floating square grid, the highly detailed door that reveals a high-key scene outside.
- Character design is great as always, even with a lower details design, aZLing can still make it works really well!
