This week I don't have many things to write about. It's a slow week, mostly working on commission
Work and Art
- Woah rendering is so fun when I know the 3d forms of the object
- I'm still lacking in lighting intuition but now's not the time to develop that skill
- I'm figuring out more and more about what I dislike about art. I might have to drop some research topics out of my life.
- I'm so focused in rendering the commission so I didn't draw any warmup sketch or study review
- but I did revisit some rendering techniques, I'm starting to apply some of them to my actual painting, can't wait to integrate the rest of them!
Non-verbal communication
(I've been thinking a lot about visual communication. It is related to my thoughts about Tacit vs Explicit Knowledge 🌱)
Since humans don't have telepathy, the most direct way we could communicate is through language and words. If I want to discuss with someone about visual communication, I would have to use verbal communication, which in many cases would be a lossy translation, either because the idea is hard to put in words, or my language skill is not sufficient.
When I work by myself, I can address a specific feeling or vague concept by just thinking about it, and all idea synthesis would happen in my head. This is not possible in a group setting or any environments involving more than 1 person (education, teamwork or blogpost like this one).
Maybe it's (one of) the reason that in such artist communities (not general audience), people tend to value whoever can properly explain their workflow (A) more than people who can't (B). I don't mean A is better than B. but A is valued more because it's easier to logically appreciate the work and thinking process of A more than B.
- example: it's harder to appreciate the ability to draw subtle difference in emotion (like an exciting happiness of a birthday party vs a gentle happiness of receiving gift from close ones) than the ability to systemize color and lighting to represent emotions.
- (more examples needed, I will archiving this in Uncategorized Art Pondering)
Inspiration
Music
- New song from EGOIST by ryo (supercell), officially romanized as Touzisya! I'm really happy that ryo still release at least 1 track each year.
- reche(chelly)'s song for Atelier Ryza
- Suisei and Kanaria collab!
- RuLu's new album, I really like Ichika Misumi's voice since Utakata Kingyo.
Arknights CN 4th Anniversary
- Overall design feels very familiar but I couldn't pinpoint exactly. Maybe Dieter Rams?
- It's kinda sad that NoriZC doesn't have any new stuff, maybe he works on the overall art direction? Upon closer inspection I can see that Muelsyse, even her E2, was probably drawn before the Pinus Knights, based on the brush strokes and shape design. I really love the design of her staff, the rainbow and how he drew the water background.
- redjuice's character was a big surprise to me. I like the clothing design and the overall silhouette and especially the blocky hair strips. One thing I didn't like is all the black details on her clothes is not distinguishable at first glance.
- Silence has interesting layered clothes, the hair gradient feels really satisfying. I would prefer a more blocky, less tapered rendering on the clothes but that's just a minor preference.
- Best part of the whole live stream for me is the skin, I really love all the new skin, especially their framing and composition, Chen's is the best!
Favorite Art of the Week
- NoriZC poster series about his office life.

- It's really experimental. I'm not an expert on Illustrator's effect but I can see that he utilized mostly basic ones, combined with some raster brush strokes. The systematic vibe of the graph, flowchart and diagram + the playful textures and compositions. Too cool. I wanna do something like that too!
