Last week I was too busy so I didn't write the blog entry. The last few weeks there was a dip in productivity so I spended the little willpower I had left to work on commission
Work and Art
I'm working with an ordered workflow and wasted a lot of time by rendering even the parts that is mostly hidden by other layers on top of it. I was able to draw a lot of interesting parts but it is such a shame it won't be seen whatsoever. Maybe I could show then here in an artwork review?
I was so stressed out with this commission so I did some figure drawing practice
Blockyness
Recently I'm thinking more and more about Blockyness , a visual quality that can be considered a rival to to Taper. Here are some of my current pondering about this
- The overall mix in Block and Taper
- How Block can tranform to Taper and vice verse
- Wedge is an interesting shape with both Block and Taper.
- My system and view on these 2 is still pretty vague. They feel like a spectrum but at the same time not. For example, Blockyness and Curve does feel like another spectrum too. Maybe it is better to view those visual qualities as a 3D map? or mutidimensional map?
Favorite Art of the week
- This week I came across Shunsai Toshimasa and his artwork about Amaterasu
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu#/media/File:Amaterasu_cave.JPG
- Similar to a lot of other Japanese woodblock print, I really like the use of gradient inside a flat artwork (the fire and the light ray)
- The way the mostly flat light ray is overlapping the background rock texture. That contrast is interesting. The tree on the left with the organic complex shape of the foliages also create another contrasting layer.
